10 Tips for Interview Success

Interviews should be for real! They should not be for fun or for practice. You should go to an interview with the sole purpose of getting a job offer!

First impressions are vital. The way you look, the way you speak and the things you say will determine whether you are successful. Here are 10 tips that if followed, will greatly improve your chances of getting that job!

1. Know about the company and the job. Prior to the interview use the web or obtain company literature and get a copy of the job description. You will get a chance to show the interviewer that you have done your homework.

2. Dress and groom appropriately. Wear clothes that are appropriate to the industry/job. For office work business suits should be worn.

3. Arrive 10 minutes early. Prepare a route map and arrive early. This will give you time to prepare and relax.

4. Meet and greet. Greet your interviewer with a big smile, firm handshake and stand tall! Make small talk during the walk from the reception area to the place where the interview will be conducted.

5. Take a drink. If offered take a drink. This will show you are relaxed and you may use it as a prop to buy time to answer questions during the interview.

6. Use a note pad. Bring a note pad with you. Use this to make notes and record answers to questions. Making notes gives a good impression even if you dont use them.

7. Prepare a minimum of six questions. Write the questions on your note pad prior to the interview. These may typically be about the company, the job, training, benefits, progression etc. At the end of the interview the interviewer may ask whether you have any questions. You can refer to your list and deal with any that are unresolved.

8. Be prepared to answer questions. There are a core of questions that may typically be asked at an interview.

9. Be interested in the interviewer. Ask how long they have worked for the company, whether they enjoy it and if you were lucky enough to be offered the position how much contact would you have with them.

10. If you want the job tell them. Express your interest and ask them if they have any further questions about you. Establish when you will hear about a further interview or decision.
